Vratislav Šotola

On par with František Vízner, Adolf Matura and Pavel Hlava, Vratislav Šotola (1931–2010) is one of the great contemporary Czech glass designers and one of the major glass artists of the second half of the 20th century. He left behind a rich legacy, from monumental architecture-related pieces to tiny decorative pots. Every glass piece he designed had a practical purpose and yet it had an extremely beautiful radiance. Cupcake lids, jars, pots, vases, famous beer mugs and trays for catering in the shape of head caps, as well as a conventional ice cream goblet. Šotola's vases, boxes, bowls and plates are surprisingly close to paintings. They are full of colour, bold curves with various combinations. “... the specific work with a lot of fine sophistication, rich colourful spirit, intellectual power and sparkling playfulness. “That’s how I remember him”, recalls another great Czech glass maker, Vladimír Kopecký.
